Billboards and trees were toppled in a number of areas and walls collapsed at the Mellieha By-pass and at Chadwick lakes on 21st December 2011, but no other serious damage was reported as Force 9 winds affected the Maltese Islands due to an intense low pressure system moving southeasterly over Sicily. Maximum wind gusts were: Mellieha 104.6km/h, Rabat 83.7km/h, Nadur 82.0km/h, Zebbug 80.4km/h, Naxxar 74.2km/h, Mgarr 74.0km/h, Zejtun 72.4km/h and Attard 70.8km/h. November ends with a bang!

November 2011 was a wet month, especially on the 29th but no records were broken. This was a sharp contrast to the previous two months which were drier than average. A total of 197.9mm of rain fell in November 2011 compared to the average of 111.9mm. The wettest November ever was in 1999 with 383.4mm.

With a mean temperature of 18.2 °C, November 2011 was just 0.2°C warmer than average. The warmest November on record was that of 1992 with a mean temperature of 19.5 °C while the coolest was that of 1998 with a mean temperature of 16.1°C.

As has been the norm for the past few months, temperatures were particularly warm during the night with November's average monthly minimum temperature of 16.0°C being 1.0°C above average. The warmest night was on the 9th with a low of 20.4°C while the coldest night was on the 28th with a minimum temperature of 12.3°C. The chilliest November night on record was in 1995 when at dawn of the 23rd the temperature dropped to just 5.7°C above freezing.

The mean monthly maximum temperature of 20.3°C was 0.7°C below average. The highest temperature recorded was 24.9°C on the 9th. The highest November temperature ever reached since temperature records began in 1987 was 28.9°C in 1990.

The most frequent wind direction was from the SE with an average wind speed at Zebbug Malta of 12.1km/h. The strongest gust of 72.2km/h occurred on the 22nd during strong winds caused by a low pressure system approaching the central Mediterranean.

There was one notable weather event in Novemer: a severe thunderstorm on the 29th that struck Gozo and the northwestern parts of Malta in the morning producing torrential rain and walnut-sized hail (2.5mm diameter confirmed at Victoria at around 12.30pm with unconfirmed reports of hail the size of golf balls in Xaghra and Xewkija). Rainfall totals were: Bahrija 123.6mm, Dingli 110.2mm, Zebbug (Gozo) 107.0mm, Xaghra 91.4mm, Mgarr (Malta) 88.0mm, Gharb 85.0mm, Sannat 85.0mm, Rabat (Malta) 79.8mm, Marsalforn 77.0mm, Victoria 72.6mm, Mellieha 70.6mm and Nadur 59.8mm.

It rained hard for some three hours in Gozo, Comino and the northwest of Malta. A stone wall collapsed on an access road in Marfa which was taking traffic from Cirkewwa because of the closure of the main road for works, while pieces of tarmac were pulled off the road surface near Ghajn Qaliet in Rabat.

Just outside Mosta, a car was carried away by rainwater and the occupants were rescued by rescuers from the Civil Protection Department. The vehicle ended up upside down near a bridge. Some homes were reported flooded in Nigret and Bahrija.

Flooding was also reported in Xlendi and in Marsalforn in Gozo. In Marsalforn, a woman and two children were rescued from a car which was pushed towards the sea.
